Opportunity Central: Forney ISD’s Hands-On Career Development
The Client
Forney Independent School District is a progressive Texas district, committed to preparing students for future success through real-world learning experiences. With a bold vision for their students, Forney ISD developed Opportunity Central (The OC)—a dynamic multipurpose campus that offers hands-on career development, access to higher education, and community engagement. The OC serves students from pre-K to high school, providing a range of opportunities, from creative workshops and fitness activities to actual student-run businesses, all designed to bridge the gap between education and real-world experience.
The Need
Forney ISD recognized that their high school students would benefit from more than traditional classroom instruction to prepare for the ever-evolving job market. Their vision was to create a learning environment where students could get hands-on experience in real-world industries, while simultaneously fostering a sense of community engagement. The district wanted to build a space that would allow students to take ownership of their learning by operating real businesses, while also benefiting the local community. The challenge lay in designing and constructing spaces that were flexible enough to support diverse activities and businesses.
The Solution
Partnering with Exploration Zones by Exhibit Concepts, Forney ISD transformed its vision into a reality. Exploration Zones designed, fabricated, and installed themed storefront vignettes across the campus, helping students engage directly with the industries they are learning about.
These spaces help students learn by doing—whether they’re arranging bouquets in the floral shop or gaining customer service experience in the Welcome Center. Each environment is designed to prepare students with real-world skills while fostering a deeper connection to the curriculum.
